Great Gatsby symbols

“The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald explores the life of the main character in the novel, Jay Gatz. Throughout the novel, we follow the lives of the eight main characters in the book through a journey of ups and downs and we as a viewer get to understand what the three different social classes are like. Fitzgerald implements the symbols of the Greenlight, the Valley of Ashes and East Egg to show how life is an illusion. Through my analysis of The Great Gatsby, I will be focusing on these symbols and be showing how they are an illusion and that although you may be in an illusion life will always be there to catch up with you.

For Gatsby, the Greenlight represents hope. “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter- tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther… And one fine morning- so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” This quote represents how Gatsby always had dreams for the future, it relates to what the Greenlight was for Gatsby: it was the dream that Gatsby had for his whole life, to be with Daisy. However, this was not to be and all along Gatsby was living in the illusion of being with Daisy he had been chasing her all his life and

  1. Stop and think about the structure of your paragraph- you have not explained your statement but rather, just launched into your example.

    Think carefully about the unpacking of your evidence (example). It is just like we have done in class: systematically analysing each section of the quote to find the overall meaning.
